DMCRG Scholarly Resources

DMCRG Scholarly Resources

As a researcher working in house music and disco (and broadly within dance music generally) I have obviously been collating sources and documents that relate to my work. These might be journal articles, monographs, edited collections, random chapters, blog posts, documentaries etc. or any other useful tidbits that I come across in the course of my work. However, all other dance music scholars working today face a similar task - having to learn of the existence of these materials through that slow process of academic osmosis, travelling from paper to paper, link to link, reference to reference in a long (and often circular chain). Thus I decided to share.

Co-incidentally, my colleague at the University of York, Dr Jack McNeill was able to win some funding to allow us to set up the Dance Music Cultures Research Group. Owing to pressures of work and real life, its not always easy to conduct research activity, and the DMCRG wasn’t as active as either of us would have liked. However, recently we ran a colloquium/meet and greet for researchers and interested parties working in dance music to meet and share their work and their interests. As part of this, I elected to take the collated lists of sources I’ve been working on and shared them with the group. In return, the group were also able to offer some other sources that were not included on my original list: as so the Dance Music Cultures Research Materials list was born.

The list is freely available to anyone and everyone with an interest in dance music scholarship. It is open to all as a locked Google Sheet. It is also a living document, with plans for constant updates when new material is published, or older material is located. As you can see from the tabs, some areas are far more complete than others (the video and audio material is in desperate need of expanding). The list is also in need of suggestions and contributions. If you have any ideas for missing materials please email directly.
